Barn Door Measuring Guide

This is to be used as a guide only.  All door openings vary, depending on the height of the door and where you want to hang your door.  You can hang your door as high to the ceiling as you want or as close to your opening as you like, it is all design preference. Please do some research on installation before choosing your exact measurements. We love youtube videos to get a feel for it!

Barn doors should overlap openings by at least an 1″ preferably 2″ on each side. Or if you like the look of a wider door you can overlap as much as you want! This greatly depends on where the doors are going. If the door will be replacing a bathroom door or another room that requires privacy, then you might want to consider a greater overlap. For instance if your opening has no trim or frame and it measures 30″ across and 80″ high, then you should consider ordering a door that is 33″ wide x 84″. The doors are hung to clear the floor by 1/2″ to fit the floor mounted door guide so a door that is a little taller than needed shouldn’t pose a huge problem.

Please make sure you have enough space on either side to slide the door open!

MEASURE: To start, measure the width of your door opening from outside molding edge to outside molding edge, and add 1 inch or more on each side for overlap.

Next, you’ll want to determine the height you want your door to be. Measure the height of your door opening from the top molding edge to floor.  However if you have a grand ceiling height and want the barn door to be taller, you should use those measurements.

Please make sure you have enough space to slide your door open properly.  Your doors should slide over slim light switches and electrical outlets & floor moldings with no problem, however if you have any protruding objects that might interfere with the slide of the door, you might want to reconsider.

We will build your door to the measurements that you provide us so please be certain that your measurements are accurate.

IMPORTANT FOR HARDWARE: Please make sure you have at least 6 inches between your ceiling and the top of the door.  Our classic track set requires 6 inches to hang properly. Some hardware tracks need about 8 inches (vintage wheels), and bypass hardware needs about 10 inches.  If you have any questions please feel free to email us.
